From idea to development

It all stems from the desire of PoloPlast's research and development team to offer its customers a highly sustainable solution with excellent technical performance.

Person picks up and observes algae in the lab

Why algae in particular?

Seaweed do not need fresh water, soil or fertilisers. They also grow much faster than trees, with some species growing up to half a metre a day.

The natural cycle

Studying nature and its cycles, it is fascinating to observe how nothing is ever wasted.

After eating an apple, for example, its peel does not turn into environmentally harmful waste, but can become part of a process that regenerates and nourishes our ecosystem.

What is it made from?+
The spoon is composed of 100% natural ingredients, it is therefore sourced exclusively from renewable sources and decomposes like the peel of a fruit (it can go into food waste, household or industrial compost). It does not release microplastics or anything else.
Why choose cutlery from Notpla material if plastic/ bioplastic cutlery is already banned in the UK and some European countries?+
We are using the same machinery as was previously used to produce plastic/ bioplastic cutlery, but this material is not a plastic/ bioplastic as defined by the UK and EU. We can leverage our manufacturing expertise to produce this cutlery, without the requirement to invest in new machinery, and at the same time providing a truly sustainable and natural solution.
Why is it a more sustainable option to wood?+
Seaweed grows much faster than trees and requires less resources to grow. Certain species of seaweed can grow up to half a metre per day.
Why is there sometimes a sweet smell when I open the bag of spoons?+
During the manufacturing process, the natural sugars are heated, which give the spoon a slightly sweet smell. It dissipates quickly after opening the bag. We are working on minimising the sweet smell further, but this is a completely natural process.
What are the white marks on the spoon from?+
Seaweed, when processed at high temperatures, loses its water content, leaving behind unique ‘white’ marks on the spoon. Rest assured, this natural, aesthetic effect doesn’t impact the product’s quality or performance. The evaporation of moisture from the material is completely normal and gives the spoon its own unique character!
Are there any allergen risks?+
The ingredients of the Notpla material we use contain no traces of crustaceans or other known allergens.
Can I eat the spoon?+
The spoon is not edible. The manufacturing practices we use are based on the spoon being a food contact material rather than a food (manufactured under Good Manufacturing Practices as defined in Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and (EC) 2023/2006). For that reason, we don’t recommend eating the spoon.
Why does the spoon become more flexible over time?+
Since the spoon is made of all-natural materials, it will absorb moisture from the air over time and begin to become more flexible. This process varies depending on conditions (e.g. relative humidity), but it is something we can control through the design/thickness of the spoon and the formulation of the material we use. We recommend storing cutlery in airtight packaging until as close to the point of use as possible
What is the shelf life of the spoon?+
The estimated shelf life of the spoon in airtight bags/ packaging is 6 months. The shelf life may be longer than 12 months, and there is an ongoing shelf-life study underway.
Which types of food applications can we provide the spoon for?+
The spoon is suitable for food contact with cold food. As it is made from a completely natural and unmodified material, it is more sensitive to temperature and moisture than plastic or paper cutlery.
